In February 2021 I had the great pleasure of revisiting the 1990 Justine album as part of SuperMusique’s Vidéos Emeraude series, an original idea by Cléo Palacio-Quintin to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Productions SuperMusique, which consisted of the production and broadcast of 8 videos, both musical and documentary.

Taken from the Justine repertoire (Hétu, Labrosse, Roger, Trudeau), Le monstre is one of the pieces on their album Suite. An extension of the groups Wondeur Brass and Les Poules, Justine amalgamates written structures and improvisations, uncompromisingly extending the daring between sound construction and deconstruction. To make the score (excerpt above), I transcribed what I was hearing in colour and texture and separated these elements out for each performer.
Performing:
- David Cronkite, voice
- Daniel Áñez, synth
- Nicolas Caloia, electric bass
- Maya Kuroki, voice
- Jennifer Thiessen, viola
- Terri Hron, electronics
