stars behind stars premiere

I’ll be playing my new work stars behind stars with Cléo Palacio-Quintin and Ben Duinker at Productions Fiolûtröniq/SMCQ’s concert Archipelago: Exploring the work of Sandeep Bhagwati. Cléo and I have been on bringing this show to life for more than a year and we’re excited to present it to you!

The concert is part of SMCQ’s Serie Hommage. See the event page here.

stars behind stars is inspired by Sandeep’s works and unusual score formats. It is a 26-card musical deck with rules for use. The title is taken from a passage in Iris Murdoch’s novel The Sea, The Sea, which is reminiscent of Archipelago. The theme we explore is the materials in space and its ruptures, in the form of supernovae. The cards in the game refer to the space matter(cosmic rays, magnetic fields, dust, etc.), the types of stars (dwarfs, giants, etc.), and the chemical elements that make up these stars (hydrogen, helium, etc.). Five additional cards correspond to the years when supernovae (implosions of stars at the end of their lives) were visible from earth without a telescope. By combining these stellar phenomena and the space matter, this music invites you to consider a cosmic temporality far beyond our human experience. I’m grateful to the the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and the SMCQ for their support of this commission.
